Multiple Choice Questions

Multiple choice questions allow respondents to select one answer from a list of predefined options. They’re the most commonly used question type for collecting quantifiable data.

When to Use

Multiple choice questions are ideal for:

  • Demographic questions - Age ranges, income brackets, education levels
  • Mutually exclusive options - Yes/No, satisfaction levels, frequency
  • Categorical data - Product preferences, department selection
  • Quick decisions - Simple preferences with clear choices

Adding a Multiple Choice Question

  1. Click Add Question in the survey editor
  2. Select Multiple Choice
  3. Enter your question text
  4. Add answer options
  5. Configure settings

  • Type directly in the option field

The “Other” response appears in results as a separate category with the text they entered.

Randomization

Reduce order bias by randomizing options:

  • Randomize all - Complete random order
  • Randomize except last - Keep “None of the above” at end
  • Randomize except first and last - Anchor specific options

Required Response

Best Practices

Writing Good Options

Do:

  • Make options mutually exclusive
  • Use parallel grammatical structure
  • Cover all possible answers
  • Order logically (alphabetical, numerical, or by frequency)

Don’t:

  • Overlap answer ranges (e.g., “1-5” and “5-10”)
  • Use double negatives
  • Include more than 7-8 options
  • Lead respondents to a particular answer

Question Wording

Clear and specific:

Good: "How often do you exercise per week?"
Bad: "Do you exercise?"

Neutral tone:

Good: "Which feature is most important to you?"
Bad: "Which amazing feature do you love most?"

Troubleshooting

Low Response Quality

  • Options may not cover all answers (add “Other”)
  • Question may be confusing (simplify wording)
  • Too many options (consider grouping)

Skewed Results

  • Check for leading question wording
  • Review option order (try randomization)
  • Ensure options are balanced

”Other” Overuse

If many respondents select “Other”:

  • Review if options are comprehensive
  • Consider adding common “Other” responses as options
  • May need to restructure question
